Dieting

Dieting-Getting Started

Whether you are trying to get in great shape or are just trying to shed a few pounds, your diet should be the most important part of your daily regimen.

All of my friends and family always ask me how I stay so fit. Its no secret….I watch what I eat. Now that doesn’t mean that I never cheat and indulge in junk food or high calorie meals but I usually keep that to a minimum.

Advanced Dieting

If you plan on making drastic changes in your appearance then you will have to count calories, eat mostly natural or organic foods, and time your meals in an organized fashion. We usually recommend eating about 5 small, well balanced meals a day spread out by about 2-3 hours.

Diets are unique to each dieter and depend on…
1. Your lifestyle and daily schedule
2. Your Metabolism
3. Your budget
4. Your health conditions
5. Your fitness goals
6. Your food preferences

Lifestyle
Here is what we recommend— Cook your core foods such as grilled chicken breast, lean beef, brown rice, ground turkey, hard boiled eggs and steamed vegetables in bulk on your day off. Most people cheat on their diets because the right food is not readily available. If you pre-cook most of your food for the week, it’s very easy to open your fridge and heat up healthy meals.

Metabolism
Your metabolism is a crucial part in controlling how well you process the foods that you are eating. Some people are blessed with great genes that allow them to eat just about anything. The rest of us have to work hard to keep our bodies in shape. Depending on your fitness goals,  weightlifting is one of the best ways to boost your metabolism. Our theory behind this is simple: Your body will break down the foods you eat and distribute it to the parts of your body that need it most. If you are increasing your muscle mass, then your body will feed that first and then store or process the rest accordingly. After a while your body will begin to adjust its food allocation and your metabolism should change for the better. The goal is to increase your metabolism so that its even faster when you sleep or are idle ( in an office chair, watching TV etc).

Budget
Dieting can be very expensive and needs to be matched with your budget. Our old adage is stick to the outside of the supermarket when you shop. If you think about it that’s where all of the natural, fresh and mostly healthy foods are. All of the frozen microwave meals, sugary soft drinks, alcohol, fatty snacks, and tempting desserts are on the inner isles. If you are on a budget, buy your core foods in bulk at warehouse stores (Costco, Sam’s Club, BJ’s etc.) and freeze the excess food for your next few weeks. Then go to the supermarket to replenish perishables such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. If money is not an issue, then let the professionals do it for you. Companies like Sunfare or Victus take the hassle out of cooking your meals by delivering excellent tasting and healthy meals to your doorstep daily.

Your Health Conditions
It is important to note that dieting may not be for everyone. Certain health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels have very strict dieting restrictions. If you have or suspect that you have any health conditions, please consult with your physician before following our advice.

Fitness Goals
Before beginning any diet program, you must set a goal and plan accordingly. If your goal is to get leaner then you are going to want to cut down your daily caloric intake. Simply speaking this means stop eating deserts, soft drinks, fast food, and anything else that is calorie rich. Now if you are trying to get more muscular, then your diet changes completely. Depending on what you look like when you start training, you will want to eat more of the right foods. This obviously gets a lot more specific when you break down different foods actual contents (protein, fat, and carbohydrates). We will go over all of this in detail in the general nutrition section.

Food Preferences
The reality is everyone has different tastes and food preferences. You may be vegetarian, have food allergies or just plain don’t like certain foods. Don’t worry we will offer you a sample diets and suggestions for just about any preference. The beauty of the modern world is that we have so many options to choose from. It seems nearly impossible that we can’t find some healthy foods that you can and will enjoy eating.

I read your article on Dieting and I have a few questions. I try to work out about 3 days a week. I eat mostly healthy foods and I do cardio everynow and then. I am not seeing great results. What am I doing wrong?

    Gabe,
How often are you eating, what exactly are you eating, how intense are your work outs and what are you doing for cardio and what results are you looking for?

It sounds like you are trying to lose weight. Try to eat a healthy breakfast and I don’t mean pancakes suasage and hashbrowns. Eat a few eggwhites and some whole wheat toast or some plain oatmeal. A few hours later eat a banana or a half of a grapefruit. For lunch have a light turkey sandwich or a nice romaine lettuce salad with grilled chicken and balsmaic dressing. Eat a handful of almonds as a snack before dinner. For dinner make sure you eat light like a piece of baked Tilapia with some steamed spinach. You don’t want to eat a heavy meal before bed because you wont burn off many calories while you sleep.

Are you sore from your work outs and do they make you sweat? If not you need to make some changes. Try switching up the order you do your work outs and increase the reps. Take less time in-between sets for rest and and do more full body excercises. Circuit training is a great way to work your whole body while getting a decent cardio work out. You could do this 3 days a week and intensify it every other week. Blog us back if you need anything else.

It is very interesting reading about diets as there seems to be a new one every month or week. Losing weight and living healthier is something our countries needs but most diets are setting people up for failure. Cutting out certain foods is not the solution but eating less, more frequently and the right foods at the right time is the solution. There are many factors to dieting and your post did a great job.
