hey jonny its melissa, i had a question for you because i have not gotten a good answer elsewhere. soo i started weight watchers 2 weeks ago and so far so good. :) but it occurred to me that ww only measures pounds lost. so i went to my gym and had them measure me and take my body fat and all that. and the trainer that took my measurements asked me to ask ww what in their program will prevent me from losing my lean muscle mass. so i asked but the leader just told me to keep working out so that i am building muscle but it wasnt the most confident in her answer so i thought you might have some advice for me…thanks!!! hope all is well

Hi Mellissa– Thanks for writing to us. I’m very sorry for the delayed response. You are on the right track by choosing to diet and exercise. Using pounds alone may not be the best way to guauge your fatloss. Sometimes when you diet and excercise your body begins to replace fat with muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat which can often make you think you are not “loosing weight”. Yet I think most people mean looking more fit when they use the term “loosing weight”. So in this case I would say continue taking measurements of your self and watch your energy levels. Weight watchers is a great way to motivate yourself to get back in shape yet diets aren’t universal. Everyone reacts a little differntly to certain foods. A good diet will leave you feeling energetic, content and hungry for more healthy food.

Your leader was right when she mentioned that you need to gain more muscle. Most women I train seem to think that lifting weights will make them grow bulky muscles. Women don’t produce the testosterone leves men do and will not grow the same way we do. The harder you lift the better. As your muscle grows, your metabolism begins to process the foods you eat to repair your grwoing muscles. The result is a stronger, leaner you. If by chance you appear to look bulkier, don’t worry its just a transition stage that can be changed by adjusting your diet.

I hope this answers your questions— keep us posted on your progress.
